1. Look to play with better competition. Find a skins game or a competitive group that currently plays much better than you and ask them if you can get in their group. If they say no, ask them even it's just every once when a while. They will probably allow you at least once. If they don't tell them you want like to play them for a friendly wager, money talks to good players. Every competitive group will have some for of money at stake and that's a great thing to motivate you to get better. I'm not advising playing these guys for lots of cash, just something friendly to get you nervous so you can see how you compete
2. Practice your up and down game with one ball only so basically you chip or pitch or lob a shot then putt it out. Making a 2 is par for the hole and if you hole the shot that would be a birdie Play 18 holes on a practice chipping green and find all kinds of different shots and try to get up and down all 18 times in a row. This is extremely tough, but is doable. Harvey Pennick used to really advocate this game and one of my mentors Rob Rennell also advised this practice, Rob actually built an 18 hole short game practice course and called it Runyans run, named after the great Paul Runyan. All of Rob's juniors had some of the best short games I'd ever seen. Once you get to where you only shoot 1 to 3 over every time you play the game, then you will be on your way to playing and beating the guys in the better groups. Make sure you make the 18 difficult so it makes you hit all the shots.
3. Develop a tournament schedule to start the year by playing in a min of 10 tourneys in a 1 year period. Try to only play 4balls or individual tourneys although scrambles are better than nothing, but be careful not to rely on your partners or try things you would not try playing your own ball.
4. Practice your golf specific fitness, really try to develop full mobility of the hips and shoulders, work on loosening the muscles around the neck and back as well. Most men in general are strong enough physically to smash the ball, but the lack of flexibility really cuts into that power due to restrictions of rotation, mostly in the upper body. Limited flexibility can kill your power even if your very strong all over, this is because your playing a rotational throwing sport. I always suggest martial arts training kickboxing and grappling really open up your body to be able to move well in the swing
5. Mentally see yourself as the level of golfer that you want to be. Visualize every night before you go to bed seeing yourself playing great golf, winning tournaments and also just enjoying the game itself. Most all great players visualize playing the golf course in their head the night before playing the tournament which is great, but It's more important to me as seeing yourself becoming the player you want to become as well and seeing it as there is no other way.
